rs.

Quick Start Guide to
Searching the GERMNEWS Notebooks
All messages to GERMNEWS are saved or "archived" in units
called NOTEBOOKS or LOGS each month. You can search these Notebooks for
references using the powerful database searching function of
LISTSERV to get the information you want.
[NOTE: You will be searching the GERMNEWS Notebooks by sending
commands to LISTSERV. It is important to remember that these
commands are always included in the *body* of email, not the
subject line (which is ignored) and always sent to the LISTSERV
address, never GERMNEWS]
There are two steps to searching the archives. First put your
search together and send it to LISTSERV@vm.gmd.de which will
return as mail an index or list of the messages that meet your
search criteria, each with a unique item number. Using this item
number, you then send another request for the specific messages
you want, which will be returned as a longer DATABASE OUTPUT
file.
Both of these outputs will be preceded by a short note
indicating how much of the LISTSERV resources you used. This is a
subtle way of indicating that, although you are not going to be
billed by the LISTSERV site, in fact, there is a cost. If you
have a very complicated search or one that extends over a large
amount of material, consider doing it during non-business hours,
since the LISTSERV host site will be busy during the day. It
will be faster and more considerate of the host site resources.
For a "Table of Contents" of GERMNEWS, the following can be
used as a template and sent to LISTSERV@vm.gmd.de (again, not
GERMNEWS). The first line of the message will be "//"
and the last line will be "/*"
------------------------- cut here ----------------------------
//
Database search DD=rules
//Rules DD *
Select * in GERMNEWS
Index
/*
------------------------- cut here ----------------------------
This will search all the messages that have been sent to
GERMNEWS, showing the unique item number, the date and time sent,
approximate length in lines and the subject line. (Template
courtesy of Pete Weiss, LDBASE-L owner, at PSUVM.)
Perhaps you remember there was some news earlier in
the year about "Scharping and FDP and you want to see
what was said. The next template will search the database for all
messages that include both "fiction" and "history":
------------------------ cut here ------------------------------
//
Database search DD=rules
//Rules DD *
Search Scharping and FDP in GERMNEWS
Index
/*
---------------------------- cut here ---------------------------
["Or" and "not" can be used with, or in place of, "and" to
construct more refined searches. The SUBJECT: and SENDER: fields
can also be searched for even a more powerful search. You can
also limit searches to a certain time period.]
>From this request you will get back a file called DATABASE
OUTPUT. The beginning of this message will read as follows:
> Search Scharping and FDP in GERMNEWS
--> Database GERMNEWS, 16 hits.
> Index

The message tells you there have been 16 'hits'--that is, 16
messages possibly relating to the arguments you defined. The
DATABASE OUTPUT file shows the item numbers for each 'hit,' the
date and time each was sent, the number of lines in each
message, and their subject lines. You will now be able to order
each/all of the messages or 'hits' listed in the DATABASE OUTPUT
file.
If you think items 000086, 000104, 000105 and 000106 are
what you want, send a second batch of commands to
LISTSERV@uicvm.uic.edu, using this template:
-------------------- cut here --------------------------------
//
Database search DD=Rules
//Rules DD *
Search * in GERMNEWS
Print 86 104 105 106
/*
------------------- cut here ---------------------------------
If the line beginning with print goes to two lines, write
print again at the beginning of the next line. If the messages
you want to order are in a sequence, listserv will recognize the
"-" as meaning all messages in a certain sequence (e.g. 104-106).
In the above example you may use the Print order as
Print 86 104-106
You will get back the resources-used message and mail containing
the four messages.
If you do much searching, it is convenient to keep these batch
search files as templates or macros which can just be called in
to the email after changing the search terms.
This note is intended only as a quick guide to searching
GERMNEWS. It will get most subscribers what they want. However,
very complicated, Boolean searches can be performed, if desired.
For a complete description and extended treatment, send the
command GET LISTDB MEMO F=MAIL to your nearest LISTSERV (*not* to
GERMNEWS). This runs about 2200 lines and is well worth
studying.
LDBASE-L is a list dedicated to LISTSERV search techniques the
finer points of archive searching. Its address is
LDBASE-L@ukanvm.bitnet; to subscribe send to LISTSERV
at that address with command SUB LDBASE-L Your Name.
These same techniques with appropriate changes in the name
and search strings will work with any Revised LISTSERV.
